Hala February Events 2013

In my 9 years of living here I have never attended any events for Hala February mostly due to the fact there is almost 0 information out there. I tend to find out about events I missed when I see pictures in the newspapers which sucks. I'm mostly interested in traditional/cultural events rather than circus acts. I've seen some pictures of the races in Jahra but that's not the type of area I would want to go to see them. An ideal scenario would have been having all of the cultural/traditional events held at "Heritage Village" but alas that project has come to a screeching halt and no one seems to know why(I'd say it has something to do with Wasta).

I know Kuwait has some Kuwaiti singers and traditional dancers but where are they? Aren't there any "family" shows with falcons and tents for people to visit? Where are the traditional Sadu weavers? Here's my idea, rennovate the old Al-Shaya Kuwaiti house and turn it into a heritage museum where they hold traditional venues for tourists. I know it's right beside the Emir's palace but it can be gated, right? It's a huge piece of land and the house itself is huge as well. It seems every country has it's own heritage village, why not Kuwait?

After searching for hours I came up with a few things to do at Green Island. I have no idea when or where there may be more parades or shows which is ok because I can't see myself fighting the crowds and places for parking.

CIK- 3rd year Already!

I've learned a lot these past three years, I've met some great people and have enjoyed my blogging time. Some people wonder why my views can be harsh but this blog is not for my personal family experiences or for advertising, it's information about Kuwait and sometimes the surrounding GCC states in which I tend to voice my opinion about the matter. For those who understand me and continue to read I give thanks and for those who take offense to some of the things I say it's called freedom of speech, like it or hate it, it is what it is. KUWAIT CITY, Aug 28:

“According to astronomical calculations and visibility conditions, Monday, Aug 29th, will be the last day of Ramadan and Tuesday, Aug 30th, will be the first day of Eid Al-Fitr,” well known Kuwaiti astronomer Dr Saleh Al-Ojairi told Al-Watan Arabic daily.

Al-Ojairi called on decision-makers in Kuwait and the Islamic Arab world to shun differences and avoid controversy when it comes to the sighting of the crescent and declaration of the first day of Eid Al-Fitr. He added that differences among Sunnis and Shiites are the main cause of controversy in this issue

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 22:

The first day of Eid Al-Fitr will fall on Aug 30 because the Shawal crescent (Hegira month) will not be visible on Aug 29, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting Astronomer Adel Al-Sadoon.
Al-Sadoon explained it is impossible to see the crescent in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries except through telescopes in nations in the southern part of the equator in Africa. He said, “these countries are similar to us in most of the nights, so Aug 30 will most likely be the first day of Eid according to the visibility of the crescent.”

Gerge3an

It's gerge3an (pronounced girr-geean) celebration time. I've had the bad kids from downstairs come to my house yesterday and today. Too bad they aren't dressed up like they should be, they're just looking for free candy.

As in the past, on the thirteen, fourteenth and fifteenth nights of Ramadan, children wander through the neighborhood in groups dressed in traditional outfits. They keep singing and praying to Allah to protect the children of the houses they visit. The mothers give them candies and nuts in celebration. It's kind of like halloween in the states minus the pumpkins.



Inshallah when my kids grow up they too will celebrate. I just hope the tradition continues, Kuwait has lost so many traditions already.
