GUIDED TOUR: SAS MARINE MUSEUM & VISIT TO A TRADITIONAL COFFEE SHOP

The SAS Marine Museum displays twelve large model Arabic Dhows—wooden boats powered only by the wind. Adjacent to the museum is the world's largest Dhow, 'Al Hashemi-II’ and on the wall of the museum, is the authentic certificate earned in 2002; A Guinness World Record for the 'largest wooden Arabic Dhow’ The museum showcases traditional Dhow shipbuilding tools and pictures of maritime activities including seafaring expeditions, shipbuilding and pearl diving. Join AWARE for a fascinating look into the history of the Dhow and the small seaport of Kuwait. After the tour of the museum and Hashemi II Dhow, AWARE guests will visit one of the traditional coffee shops near Marina Mall. Tea / Coffee will be provided. National Memorial Museum Tour- Sept 12

TIES Cultural Tour to the National Memorial Museum

The TIES Center has organized a fully guided tour to the National Memorial Museum, which is dedicated to the remembrance of the brutal Iraqi invasion, the resistance that took place during the occupation, and Kuwait's liberation.

This is NOT a typical museum: please be advised that this event may be hard for some to handle as the audio and visual displays within the museum are very dramatic.

The bus will leave the TIES Center at 5:30PM on September 12th.

Admission is 1KD, which will be payable at the entrance.

What To Do in Kuwait- Behbehani Complex

If you are into visiting historical places in Kuwait then this is one of the places to see. After having lunch we took a tour of the Complex as I had never seen the inside of the complex. Since the construction of the highway the Complex is not as crowded and you can take a walk and check out the buildings. It is so beautiful and I wish I could live there! Unfortunately it seems as if no one is taking care of it anymore. Some buildings need some new paint and the foliage needs some trimming but I love it. 

A little history about the Complex:
Behbehani Complex is located in Al Watia area which means "footmarks" in Kuwaiti dialect. The area was given the name because people used to stroll beside the shore leaving their footprints in the wet sand. In the early 1940's Yusuf Shreen Behbehani built the Complex as his first major real estate project. The Complex was designed by an Iranian architect and built by Iranian workers. The complex has 28 dwelling units in which half of the units were occupied by the Behbehani family while the rest were rented out to foreigners. In the mid 1960's the Behbehani family left and over time the houses fell into a state of disrepair. During the Iraqi invasion the Complex was looted by Iraqi soldiers. The complex is considered on of the very first two-story residential sites and 40,000 KD was spent on repairing it. Cities in Transition scroll to page 32.

The back side pictured above used to have a huge parking lot and there was a round-a-bout and was once a crowded place to visit.  I remember getting stuck in traffic and having to fight for parking sadly the highway cut the area in half and a lot of the businesses relocated or shut down. I think it can once again be a happening place to visit if the NCCAL would put me in charge.

Arabic Calligraphy represents unity, beauty and power. Join us for a tour of the Tariq Rajab Museum of Calligraphy to further explore the beauty and history expressed in this captivating art. The tour will be conducted in English. All are welcome. Cameras are encouraged. Seating is limited. Advance reservations are required. Departure from AWARE: at 5:00pm Return Departure: 7:00pm Tour Fee: 4KD per person.

Zumba in Kuwait

I tried out Zumba fitness before I left Florida and I thought it was great. I love the music and it was more like dancing than exercising. Finally there are classes here in Kuwait taught by Amani Abbasy, a Zumba qualified instructor. If I had more rythm I might have tried to be an instructor but for now I will be a student.

She will be teaching Zumba at B villa, it's 10 KD with Amani as an instructor I guess all other classes without Amani is 4 KD. Monthly packages are offered, depending on how many you want to take (minimum 16 KD). It's a little confusing so I will have to contact her for more info. I took a 6-week class for $60 back home so 10 KD per class is a little steep. I have the cd kit at home with my shaker sticks so I may have to stick with that, I just hate working out in front of the kids, they get a kick out of making fun of me.

This presentation explores Kuwait’s rich history and uses it as a guide for understanding the country and its people of 2011. It looks at the rich heritage of Kuwait’s past and how it influenced adjustment to change and modernization with the residents of today. Ilene arrived Kuwait in October 1984 and has been learning about her “adopted” home since. She is an educator who held positions as teacher and principal at a private American school in Kuwait for 10 years plus. Currently, she is employed at Gulf University for Science and Technology while pursuing her doctorate in Educational Administration with research in the area of leadership and professional development of teachers.

Outdoor Rock Climbing in Kuwait

For all of you outdoor rock climbing enthusiasts there is a location at Marina Waves in Salmiya. It's across the street from Marina Mall located on the water. The building is a round looking building with a Maki restaurant there too. They have a 12.5 m-high climbing wall.
