It's that time of year, AWARE Center in Surra is holding their annual dishdasha night on March 27, from 7-9 pm, the even is free but prior registration is required 2533-5280 or email info@aware.com.kw you can check out my post from last year's event. The food was great and the speech about Kuwait was very informative.

GUIDED TOUR: SAS MARINE MUSEUM & VISIT TO A TRADITIONAL COFFEE SHOP

March 13, 2014 @ 5 PM

The SAS Marine Museum displays twelve large model Arabic Dhows—wooden boats powered only by the wind. Adjacent to the museum is the world's largest Dhow, 'Al Hashemi-II’ and on the wall of the museum, is the authentic certificate earned in 2002; A Guinness World Record for the 'largest wooden Arabic Dhow’ The museum showcases traditional Dhow shipbuilding tools and pictures of maritime activities including seafaring expeditions, shipbuilding and pearl diving. Join AWARE for a fascinating look into the history of the Dhow and the small seaport of Kuwait. After the tour of the museum and Hashemi II Dhow, AWARE guests will visit one of the traditional coffee shops near Marina Mall. Tea / Coffee will be provided.  As in the past, on the thirteen, fourteenth and fifteenth nights of Ramadan, children wander through the neighborhood in groups dressed in traditional outfits. They keep singing and praying to Allah to protect the children of the houses they visit. The mothers give them candies and nuts in celebration. It's kind of like halloween in the states minus the pumpkins.

Dishdasha night Pictures

I dragged my hubby to dishdasha night, he thought it was silly but I insisted on going for the food and I wanted to see how they present Kuwaiti culture to expats. We started off in the tent with dates and sweets and moved on to the basement where there was traditional clothing for people to try on. My hubby had his dishdasha and I wore my abaya so we were good. In the other room there were different kinds of Kuwaiti dishes.

The only issue I have with AWARE center is the space. When I took the cooking class it was so cramped and crowded and the same thing with this event. There was seating on the outside of the tables and a small area in between to maneuver. There was about 40 people in the small area and it was hard to get to the food but overall it was a nice experience. After everyone was served there was a presentation about Kuwaiti culture.

For a rewarding, spiritual and informative experience. This is a 1 ½ tour of one of Kuwait’s most famous landmarks. Ladies are required to cover - long sleeves and long ankle length skirt, otherwise the mosque will provide a cloak. If you have your own scarf you’re welcome to bring it. Camera’s allowed. Children welcome. This tour meets directly at the Grand Mosque at 9.15am. Directions to the Grand Mosque. Take Gulf Street towards the Kuwait Towers. Pass the Towers with them on your right. Pass Souq Sharq with it on your right. Pass the Dickson House and Ministry of Planning with them on your left. By Seif Palace there is a large roundabout. Take the 2nd exit off the roundabout. The Grand Mosque is now on your left. At traffic lights turn left. Grand Mosque is on your left. To park go down to the roundabout and come back so Grand Mosque is on your right. Car Parking - If you are driving you can park at the mosque. The entrance is found by taking the side road between the Al-Babtain library and the Grand Mosque. Then you will see a barrier on your left. Tell the guard you are there for a tour and he will let you in, you follow the road round and can park in front of the mosque.

This presentation explores Kuwait’s rich history and uses it as a guide for understanding the country and its people of 2011. It looks at the rich heritage of Kuwait’s past and how it influenced adjustment to change and modernization with the residents of today. Ilene arrived Kuwait in October 1984 and has been learning about her “adopted” home since. She is an educator who held positions as teacher and principal at a private American school in Kuwait for 10 years plus. Currently, she is employed at Gulf University for Science and Technology while pursuing her doctorate in Educational Administration with research in the area of leadership and professional development of teachers.

This is a 1 ½ tour of one of Kuwait’s most famous landmarks. People are requested to meet on location at 9:15am. Tour starts at 9:30am. Dress code conservative, cameras aloud. The Grand Mosque is an important landmark of Kuwait. This tour begins with all interested individuals meeting at the Grand Mosque. Please note, women are kindly requested to wear long and loose fitting clothing and may take a scarf for covering their hair or otherwise will be provided one by the grand mosque"
